Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life. Ps. 119:50.
I forgot to say yesterday but actually I've signed up to get a daily bible verse txted to my phone (did it when I was at Winterjam--which was fantabulous btw - planning on posting the pics someday... ;). Every day I'll post the verse I get and whatever I'm thinking at the time.
Right now I'm thinking if you want daily bible verses you can text "Uncover" and your email address to 31452 (at least it should work - if not check out UncoverTheWord.com/artists that should work [crossed fingers]).
In the meantime I want to talk about today's verse - "Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life." Everyone's been hurt in some way or another (I myself have terrible trouble with people of the male persuasion), but this verse--and for that matter the whole bible--shows us that God is there for us. A great verse that I love goes along with this (kind of. Bear with me) "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8) Sometimes I find myself just reading, not comprehending or letting the words sink in, but to really understand this--to really understand God--you have to dig deeper than what you can see.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:" We already know that God loves us. He formed us from the dust and breathed his own life into us. When Adam and Eve disobeyed him in garden he still loved them, it was because he loved them that their sin made him sad. He loved us so much that he even sent his only son to die for us.
Now stop for a minute. I want you to think. The phrase "he sent his only son" has been used so much that people have started to just zone out when they hear it. It's not really conscious, it's more like when you hear your favorite song too many times and stop listening when it's on. Also, being used so much doesn't make it any less important, just less impacting. So I want you to take a moment and think. Think about the thing or person you love the most in the entire world; it might be your mother of father or sister or brother or son or daughter. It might be your best friend, your girlfriend or boyfriend, your husband or wife. It could be your pet rock. Whatever or whoever it is, think about them. About how much you love them. Now imagine they were gone. Ah ah ah your not listening to me, your just reading this with indifference, aren't you? Stop. Think about it. You would sad right? Utterly heartbroken? Now imagine you had to be the one to send them to their death. Absolutely horrifying, isn't it? But that's what God had to do. He had to send his only son--the thing he loved the most--to die for us. To save us. He must love us a lot.
The next part of the verse says "while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us". While we were yet sinners. While we were yet liars and thieves. Prostitutes, adulterers, lawyers, and murderers. While we were yet lonely and lost and afraid. Battered and bruised. Beaten and raped. While we were yet imperfect, Christ died for us.
Even when we're suffering and don't feel like we're worth anything at all, God has given us the promise that he will love us no matter what, and that when this life ends, so long as we entrust ourselves to him, we will be with him together forever in paradise.
Happy Saturday, you are loved.
